Focus on your health. We’ll cover the details.

When you are a student, you must prioritize your health and wellness so you can excel in your studies. At Rutgers University–Newark, we make sure that you can meet with a provider without worrying about the cost.

How Your Insurance Works

Health insurance is mandatory at Rutgers University–Newark. This means that if you are enrolled and registered as a full-time student, you have health care coverage through the university health plan or you are covered by your parents’ or personal insurance plans.

Regardless of insurance status, when you come to our Health & Wellness offices, your visits with medical staff are free, without copays, and you can focus on your health without worrying about the cost.

Coverage for labs and medications may vary depending on your specific insurance coverage, so we recommend reading through your plan when possible.

Health Services Eligibility

All currently enrolled/registered Rutgers University-Newark students are welcome to visit the Student Health Services-Newark. Please confirm your attendance with the RU-Newark Business Office. Contact us for more information about Health Services eligibility. Eligibility ends when you are no longer registered (for example if you complete a semester or graduate, drop out of school in the middle of a semester, or take a semester off).

Questions About Eligibility?

As long as you are a student, you are covered. Keep in mind that your eligibility ends if you graduate, drop out of school, or take a semester off.

Even if you have waived the student health insurance plan, you can still see a provider without any cost to you. But you may need to pay for services such as laboratory tests and immunizations. Get familiar with the details to make sure you have the coverage you need, or call us with any questions.
