The Rites of Passage Ceremony is an annual celebration that honors Black and Latinx students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at Rutgers University—Newark through hard work and perseverance. The event recognizes their accomplishments, dedication, and the support of their families and networks. The ceremony includes distinguished speakers, student awards, and cultural performances, culminating in a Kente Stole presentation.

The event is open to all Rutgers University—Newark undergraduate and graduate students who have or are planning to earn their degree between January 2023 and August 2023.

  • Affinity celebrations are student-led, staff supported events that serve as a space to celebrate the accomplishments of graduates while centering their shared cultural traditions and community values.
  • Affinity celebrations are open to all Rutgers-Newark graduates; pre-registration is required.
  • Current Rutgers-Newark students interested in serving on a student planning committee can reach out to the host student organization for that respective ceremony or contact the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) for more information.
