Medical Care & Immunizations
Medical Care
Student Health Services is where you go for basic primary care services. Our exams include a history review, discussion of current concerns, a thorough physical, laboratory screening tests, appropriate cancer-screening tests, and at times tests specific to a medical condition.
Primary care also includes periodic age-appropriate health assessments, evaluation, testing, and treatment for accidents or illnesses, acute or chronic.
You must have immunizations to begin at various points along your college journey:
Students in University Housing: You will not receive your room assignment or key on move-in day until you receive Menactra, the meningococcal vaccine that protects against strains ACY and W.
Students Involved in Clinical Activities (for example, Nursing): Several immunizations are required, including Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine, Tuberculosis (TB) testing, varicella, and several others.
COVID-19 Vaccine: All Rutgers students (new, returning and re-enrolling) are required under University Policy 10.3.14 to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have received a medical or religious exemption approved in writing by Rutgers’ Waiver Review Committee or are exempt from the Policy for any of the other reasons listed in the Policy. Clinical students must also submit documentation of booster dose, when eligible. University immunization and COVID deadlines can be found on the university’s Immunization Requirement webpage.
Health insurance is mandatory at Rutgers University–Newark. As a full-time student, you will either enroll in the student insurance plan or waive our plan.
Here’s how insurance covers your immunization based on your coverage:
Students Enrolled in the Student Insurance Plan
Since you are covered by student insurance, you won’t pay out-of pocket expenses for routine immunizations, including vaccine costs or visit/procedural fees. These costs are covered through direct billing to the insurance company.
Blood titers for immunity status are paid for at the time of your visit. The cost is eligible for full or partial reimbursement by the student insurance, upon submission of a paid receipt and claim form. Finally, TB skin testing is free.
Since you are not covered by student insurance, you must pay for the cost of your vaccines, blood tests for immunity status (titers), and TB skin testing. You can request a paid receipt and claim form, which can be applied for reimbursement by your insurance company. Call your private health insurance regarding reimbursements of these costs.
Similar to full-time students who waived the regular insurance, part-time students may also have coverage through their own plans. Just like those who waived the plan, you will need to pay for vaccines, tests for immunity status, and TB testing. You will also need to call your private insurance to discuss reimbursement.
Again, all immunizations are free for full-time students enrolled in the student health insurance plan. If you need to pay for your immunization or related tests, you’ll find that our prices are reasonable.
Keep in mind, however, that these prices are subject to change without prior notification. Please call us at (973) 353-5231 for current pricing.

Lower your risk for sexually transmitted infections and diseases with these prevention guidelines:
Talk honestly with your partner about any STIs and getting tested — before you have sex.
If you are unsure about a partner's status or have not yet been tested yourself, practice methods to reduce the chances of sharing vaginal fluid, semen, or blood.
If you have a male partner, use a condom correctly, and use one every time you have sex. You should also use condoms on sex toys.
Think twice about mixing alcohol and/or drugs with sex. They can lower your ability to make good decisions and can lead to risky behavior — like having unprotected sex.
Be aware that even oral sex can spread STIs, including, rarely, HIV, especially if there is tissue that is torn or cut.
Limit your number of sexual partners. You can lower your chances of getting STIs if you only have sex with one person who only has sex with you.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, helps people who do not have HIV but who are at substantial risk of getting it to prevent HIV infection by taking a pill every day.PrEP can be combined with condoms and other prevention methods to provide even greater protection than when used alone.
When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk by up to 92%. Contact us to learn more and figure out if PrEP is right for you.
Connect with VPVA for resources on education and prevention of interpersonal violence (sexual violence, partner violence, stalking and harassment) and support services for any student affected.
In collaboration with Counseling Services, Health Services provides hormone therapy (feminizing or masculinizing hormones) management to our transgender students. Speak with one of our caring providers to learn more.
The student health insurance plan has a provision regarding sexual reassignment treatment and surgery. For details, please read about how insurance and eligibility at Rutgers University–Newark works, or contact Health Services.
