I thought that my recovery life and my academic life couldn’t mix, but I’m so grateful for the Collegiate Recovery community at Rutgers Newark.
Bio: My name is Rebecca Vera a student attending Rutgers University – Newark, and majoring in Biology Major, Women and Gender Studies Minor. I have been sober for 6 years. Getting sober very young can be scary and feel like a huge sacrifice, but finding my place in a community of college students that are also in recovery not only gave me hope but allowed me to walk through huge academic fears.
About the Office: Being an undergraduate student in long term recovery can be uniquely challenging, but being a part of ADAP allowed me to transition into Rutgers Newark smoothly and with a tremendous amount of support. So every day sober, living compassionately, thoughtfully, and realizing my fullest potential is a profound blessing. Connecting with the recovery community on campus has been the highlight of my college experience; being able to feel safe, understood, and held up by students across the university has been indispensable to my personal wellness and academic success so far. Weekly check-ins, counseling sessions, activities, and groups all provide the framework for staying emotionally healthy while juggling a rigorous course load, work, and a social life. I thought that my recovery life and my academic life couldn’t mix, but I’m so grateful for the Collegiate Recovery community at Rutgers Newark.
