Conduct & Community Standards

• Investigating and adjudicating alleged incidents of student misconduct. 

• Recruiting and training members of the University Hearing Board, Campus Advisers and Campus Appeals Committee. 

• Creating learning opportunities for students through participation in the RU-N Honor Council, peer education, alternative dispute resolution and community building activities. 

• Managing student disciplinary records. 

• Facilitating ethical leadership development opportunities through workshops and tabling events. 

The Rutgers University-Newark Honor Council is a student organization comprised of a team of undergraduate and graduate students committed to upholding the standards set forth by the University Code of Student Conduct as well as promoting a safe and civil campus environment. The Honor Council’s highest duty is to provide students with a fair, educational process for resolving alleged violations of the University policies as members of the University Honor Board. Honor Council members additionally support educational programs & initiatives sponsored by the Community Standards Office. Want to become a member? The Ethical Leadership Institute (ELI) is a certificate program designed to enhance student’s ethical decision-making strategies, communication and conflict resolution skills as well as leadership development. Held each semester, the office sponsors a one-day series of ethical development workshops that engage students in conversation about ethical decision making around a specific theme related to the University Code of Student Conduct. Throughout each semester, the office additionally sponsors a series of "Know Your Code" tables where students can participate in an interactive activity related to increasing understanding of policies, procedures and resources.  Students that participate in the full-day series of (ELI) workshops will qualify to receive an ethical leadership certificate at the end of the academic year. Students interested in learning more about the ELI should contact the Office of Community Standards & Student Development. 

Codechella is a carnival style program sponsored by Community Standards and is typically held annually in September.  During Codechella students have the opportunity to participate in interactive games and activities designed to increase their knowledge and understanding of the University Code of Student Conduct as well as resources and departments on campus that support student safety, wellness and community on campus.   

Caring Community Week is a celebratory week of events that happens annually in February. The week celebrates the mission of “We R the Ones” which unites the campus community through our shared responsibility to make sure we are cultivating a community that feels safe, welcoming and inclusive. Events held throughout the week highlight departments and resources on campus and invite students to engage in conversations about the RU-N community. Events typically include a resource fair, movie night, educational workshops and tabling’s.
