Community Engagement & Service Learning

Community Engagement offers students, faculty, staff and their families an opportunity to immerse themselves in service throughout the City of Newark. Participate during both the fall and spring semesters and volunteer for organizations that cover issues such as food insecurity, community clean-up, education and literacy, community activism, homelessness, AIDS and HIV awareness, community gardening, and more. 

Alternative Break Programs provide students with the opportunity to address community challenges across the country or in our own backyards. Our aim is to create a community of lifelong active citizens who prioritize the pursuit of social justice and a commitment to civic engagement. 

Ballot Bowl is a student-driven effort to heighten voter awareness and participation through campus-wide voter registration drives. Rutgers University-Newark competed with other New Jersey schools to register the most voters on their campus. Rutgers Newark has won this competition in both 2018 and 2019, and hope to win again this upcoming season.
