Help Other in Distress
Learn about Raider Connect. Raider connect is an interactive workshop designed for everyone in our campus community (e.g., faculty, staff, students). Raider Connect is an experiential training focused on enhancing the knowledge and skill needed to help others in distress. We also emphasize the importance of developing empathic listening skills in order to truly connect with people in crisis. We also explore how to compassionately and directly ask campus community members about their suicidal thoughts. Through increased awareness of their own emotional reactions, Raider Connect gatekeepers are able to more effectively respond to students’ emotional needs and increase the likelihood of a meaningful connection with the appropriate professional resources.
Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks about them in a caring way. Findings also suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation. We can learn how to do this together in a safe, supportive atmosphere!
If you interested in organizing a training for your students group, department, or other small group, request a Raider Connect workshop.
